Impinj Gen2X RAIN RFID technology

Cisper offers Impinj hardware that supports Gen2X, including compatible tag chips, reader chips and RAIN RFID readers.

Gen2X is an Impinj-developed enhancement to the existing RAIN RFID Gen2 standard. It adds new capabilities for performance, item visibility and protection while remaining compatible with existing RAIN RFID environments.

What is Impinj Gen2X?

Gen2X is not a new RFID chip or a replacement for Gen2. It is a set of additional RAIN RFID capabilities supported by compatible tags and readers.

This makes it possible to introduce Gen2X into existing RFID environments while continuing to work with standard Gen2 tags and hardware.

Why use Gen2X?

Gen2X is designed to improve RFID performance where reliable item-level reading can be challenging.

According to Impinj testing*, Gen2X can:

• Increase tag power range by up to 25%
• Increase reader listening range by up to 40%
• Speed up inventory by up to 100%
• Improve tag readability and item detection
• Add advanced privacy, authentication and data protection

These capabilities can be especially valuable when working with small tags, densely packed items or high volumes of tagged products.

Gen2X-compatible Impinj hardware

Gen2X capabilities are supported across compatible Impinj tag and reader hardware.

Tag chips

Impinj M800 Series tag chips, including the M830 and M850, support Gen2X while remaining Gen2 compliant.

Reader chips

Impinj E910, E710, E510 and E310 reader chips can be used in Gen2X-capable readers and modules.

RAIN RFID readers

Gen2X is supported by a growing range of compatible RAIN RFID readers and reader modules. Compatible readers can work with both Gen2 and Gen2X tags, making it easier to introduce Gen2X into existing RFID environments.
