RAIN Alliance recently featured Cisper’s perspective on the changing role of RAIN RFID in supply chains, automation and reliable product data.
In the article, Bart van Elsdingen, Projects & Operations Manager at Cisper, discusses how RFID is moving beyond identification alone. For many years, RFID projects mainly focused on identifying items, improving inventory accuracy and making operational processes more efficient. Today, the focus is shifting towards the value of reliable data from physical operations.
One of the topics discussed was the Digital Product Passport (DPP). While many organisations see the DPP as a regulatory requirement, it also creates an opportunity to improve product data and connect physical products to digital information throughout the supply chain.
The article also looks at sectors where RFID adoption is growing, including logistics, manufacturing, healthcare, pharma and returnable transport items. In these markets, the challenge is often not identifying products, but gaining insight into what is actually happening in daily operations.
Examples include inventory differences between ERP systems and warehouses, incomplete shipments, missing returnable assets and manual checks that take time and still leave room for errors.
A practical example highlighted in the article is the use of RFID for returnable packaging. As companies move away from single-use packaging, knowing where reusable assets are located and whether they are returned on time becomes increasingly important.
According to Bart, successful RFID projects start with a simple business question: where are we losing time, money or control and how can better data help us improve that process?
